Mad Musings On: Beautiful Creatures By Kami Garcia And Margaret Stohl

Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1)

THE BLURB:
Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

MAD MUSINGS:
I used this book as an experiment of sorts - I wanted to see if watching the movie first would have any impact on whether or not I liked the book.  I did this because I was hearing from other people who love the series how disappointed they were with the movie!   I thought the movie trailer looked great, so I didn't want to go into it jaded.  So my Hubby and I went on a Valentine's date to see this movie on the opening weekend.  We both quite enjoyed it, although I had questions about some of the characters and the plot, which was to be expected.

Well, not far into reading Beautiful Creatures, I could already see some of the differences, although to me it's minor things like appearances and, yes, the movie peeps combines a couple of characters into one onscreen person.    That happens more than once, as it turns out.  But I can also understand the reasons the movie bigwigs would do that - it makes the story less complicated by having to track fewer characters - keep it to the main people and the main story line!   Of course there's also the omitted scenes from the book that we always cry out "Why didn't they include this in the movie?"  Personally, I would've liked to see the Winter Ball scene - but I guess it doesn't really advance the main story all that much, so it ends up being deleted - maybe it'll show up in deleted scenes, when DVD release time arrives?  Time will tell...

So, about the book.... I really was surprised at how different Book Ethan was from Movie Ethan.  He was so funny in the movie, and not as much in the book.  But it was kind of cool to see the way the guy feels about a new relationship in a YA book for a change.    I mean, for the most part he wasn't even sure she was his girlfriend!  It makes me want to just whisper in his ear "Dude, you're spending all your time with her, kissed several times, and holding hands.... she's definitely a girlfriend YEESH!"

What I'm still confused about with the book, is the ending.  The movie has a totally different ending, which I though was pretty cool, but the book didn't even hint at that.  Where did producers pull that from?  Is it in the next book, Beautiful Darkness?   Well, I suppose I'm just going to have to read that one to find out....

**** 4 stars

**On a personal note, Margaret Stohl was another of the fabulous authors I had the privilege to meet at the Smart Chicks tour last fall.  She was a delight and kept us all laughing with her hilarious antics.  I was really hoping that some of her sense of humour would appear in her writing, and I was not disappointed :)

  1. Great review! Personally, I usually don't mind seeing movie prior to reading the book, if only that I begin to picture the characters the way they are portrayed in the movie vs forming my own initial image... ;-)

    1. I usually always want to read the book first.

I think I would've pictured the characters the same way, because I'd seen them already in commercials and stuff, though.

  2. I just bought this the other day from Costco! It was so cheap that I couldn't NOT buy it. Hopefully I can read it soon and give the movie a watch. I seem to be so far behind with all these books that are becoming movies ...

And I've heard that the movie is quite different from the book, though I hate it when they mess with endings. I feel like that would mess with the next book in the series when they go to make it into a movie.

    1. I bought all 4.5 of them when they were on sale for 2.99 each on Amazon Kindle.

I thought it was a good representation of the book, despite it's differences. The ending just baffles me - I hope it's from the second book, or it's going to be a challenge when the second movie is made!

  3. I just read this while in Mexico last week! I really had no huge desire to read it before, but I too thought the movie looked really good so I thought I would read the book first. I've heard the movie has left fans of the book disappointed, but I am still looking forward to seeing it. Are you going to read the rest of the series? I'd like to, just not sure if I will do it sooner than later...

    1. Yes, I do want to read the rest of the series - I have to find out where that movie ending came from! LOL

Let me know what you think of the movie when you go see it.

I hope you had a great time in Mexico :)

  4. Oh wow, now I am sufficiently curious about both the book and the movie. I haven't read the book nor seen the movie, though I do plan to do both. I always wonder why they cut scenes that I love and it sounds like that happened here with the winter ball scene, sounds like it could have been a visually stunning scene to see on film too. I'm happy that you liked both the movie and the book though, that gives me hope! Fabulous post, Tammy!

    1. There's also scenes with 3 great aunts that were totally omitted, I think, because they don't move the story either. I've heard that they will play a bigger role in the next books, though, so they may show up in the next movie also. It would have added more humour to the movie, but the lead character was so funny by himself that more humour just wasn't needed, I guess.

So what order are you going to do the movie and book?

  5. I'm sad that its out of theatres already! I totally missed my chance I finally got the BF to take me and its gone! :'( I truthfully prefer to watch the movies first then I'm not trying to think in my head what scenes are coming up next. It also helps me vision the characters I have a hard time otherwise.(I did that in The Hobbit) But I also consider myself a movie goer before a book reader. HP/Eragon/Golden Compass/LOTR/Percy Jackson. The only reason I picked up those books and started reading was because of the movies. I'm also really good and not comparing the 2 mediums like everyone else. I'm weird that way.

    1. Really? It's out of theaters?? I'll bet it shows up at the dollar theater in a week or two then - your last chance :)

I think I'm pretty good at keeping a book and a movie separate, in my head. There are exceptions, of course....
